DAC Summer Term 2019

DAC Summer Term 2019

DAC Summer Newsletter

Welcome back, we hope you all had an enjoyable Easter Break and that you over indulged in lots of chocolate eggs! Hopefully you are looking forward to the Summer term as much as we are, here is what is happening at DAC:

Introducing Mohamed

Mohamed started his trial period with DAC last term and joins us with a BSc degree in Sports Science from Middlesex University.  Mohamed will be responsible for organising more outdoor activities so if you have not already had a chance to speak to him, please do introduce yourself and feel free to ask him about any of our forthcoming outdoor activity plans.

New books: The Shakespeare Stories

This term we are introducing child friendly versions of a number of Shakespeare stories aimed at children aged 6 years and over, giving the boys an opportunity to discover the wonderful world of Shakespeare!

As always, if the older boys would like to see a particular series of books at the club, all they need to do is let Edith know.

The Gizmo Lego Maze Challenge!

This is Gizmo:

He is a Syrian hamster in need of a more challenging daily physical exercise routine so this term the boys will divide into groups and make him a Lego maze / assault course, giving the boys an opportunity to put their design, architectural and construction skills into practice. We are looking forward to seeing the end result!

***Unfortunately Gizmo managed to escape over  the Easter break so hopefully when he is found  he can pop in on occasion to meet the boys and check on the progress of his new maze!***

Time to SWITCH!

Last year DAC brought in the Xbox One which has been extremely popular with the boys, so determined to hold the title of the best Afterschool Club EVER, we now have a Nintendo Switch and the Super Mario Bros Deluxe and MarioKart games.

And in case you are wondering;

YES there is still the homework / reading period on the two days the gaming consoles come out.

NO the consoles will not be brought out on more days – Mondays and Thursdays will remain the only two days the consoles will be brought out and we have a good system in place that ensures everyone gets a fair turn (our trusted 5 minute egg timer!)

Roger that!
We are continuously seeking ways to improve monitoring the whereabouts of each child at all times, so when the boys go outside we are now using walkie talkies to help maintain communication amongst staff. This is really making a difference as the DAC team member outside can now update staff in the main hall about anything that is happening outside, request for assistance when required, confirm who has come inside to use the toilets, who has been sent inside and for what reason and so on, so there is a continuity of supervision.
It was once famously said; “It’s good to talk!” (remember that BT advert…).
Medicine
In the rare event that a child is unwell to the point that we have to ask a parent to collect their child early, where a parent/s is at work, doesn’t work locally or does not have someone who can collect him on their behalf,  it may take some time to reach us (i.e. parent is coming from central London) so in the meantime, in order to keep the child as comfortable as possible we will have Calpol available with our first aid equipment. If you would like us to administer this, you will need to ensure we have a completed Permission To Administer Medication form on file. Please see one of the team if you would like to complete a form.
FAQ – Ad hocs!
Why do we put a limit on ad hoc attendees on certain days?
Our aim is always to ensure the safety of the boys in our care. On some days when we have a high number of attendees, it is unsafe to keep accepting boys into DAC as we need to always maintain full supervision. When there are insufficient numbers of staff we will not compromise on safety and a limit will be put in place.

Why do ad hoc sessions cost more than set day sessions?
Ad hoc attendees create an additional level of administrative work and this is managed by Cheyenne (whom some of you may remember) who works for DAC off site managing the ad hoc invoices only.

Please sign out!

As much as Edith could do with the exercise that comes from running around the school looking for boys who have not been signed out but have been taken home, it would just be easier if boys being collected were signed out, so please remind any carers or visitors collecting the boys on your behalf to always sign the correct boy out.
